Recovering from burnout after a NICU stay with Dr. Claire Plumbly | S3E38

Burnout is something a lot of people can relate to – but do you know what actually causes it? And more importantly, how can you recover from it?
A NICU stay is almost the perfect storm that could lead to burnout, from the uncertainty, to the noisy machines and flashing lights, to a lack of support and understanding from others, it’s no wonder it’s incredibly hard to deal with… and we all know that doesn’t really stop when you get home, either.
Joining us on the podcast today to discuss all things burnout is Dr. Claire Plumbly, the Director of Good Therapy Ltd and also an experienced HCPC-Registered Clinical Psychologist and EMDR consultant supervisor. As well as 1-1 therapy, she runs regular workshops on burnout; boundaries; anxiety and overthinking and is the author of Burnout: How to Manage Your Nervous System Before It Manages You. She has an active presence on social media where she aims to make psychological ideas and resources more accessible to the public to help improve wellbeing and debunk therapy misconceptions.
If you recognise burnout in yourself, you’ll be sure to find some ideas in this episode to try straight away that will hopefully allow you to recover and be a more present, calm parent to your baby.
In this episode, we’re chatting about:
- Why the nervous system responds in the way it does and how you can come back to the “green”, rest and digest zone
- What burnout is and why it’s so difficult to deal with
- Ideas for transitioning between different activities so that you can spend less time in “amber” and “red”
- How you can ask for and accept help when you are stuck in burnout
- How to have more compassion for yourself and allow yourself to rest
